The centre-back already faces a battle with Steven Gerrard for the England armband after missing the World Cup through injury.
And Old Trafford manager Alex Ferguson insisted: "Nemanja Vidic has been given the captain's armband because he has been available all the time."
Ferdinand, 31, has never been United's official skipper but he has led the team out many times because of club captain Gary Neville's injury woes.
And many fans expected him to get the nod - particularly when he was given the honour against Rangers in midweek.
But now Ferguson has confirmed it will be fellow defender Vidic, 28, who carries out the duties on a more regular basis.
Fergie said: "We want it to be a player who's consistently available for us.
"Everyone will recognise that if Vidic is fit - and he has been all season - he'll always be there.
"You wouldn't leave him out of your team unless you were resting him.
"He has started the campaign as the captain and it will stay that way."
Fergie's decision suggests that Ferdinand has some way to go before convincing the boss he is completely clear of injuries.
But the Old Trafford chief is pleased to have him available for tomorrow's clash with Liverpool.
Fergie added: "It is good to have Rio back. If he plays, it is because he is an outstanding player.
Is this a sign?
Before Ronaldo left for Real, he was given captaincy for a couple of matches...
now Vidic has also been handed it after a transfer season full of speculation about him leaving?
i guess he is the only one that fit into that category since rooney is a bad boy.

Contracts are just pointless pieces of paper to clubs like Real. Ronaldo signed a five-year deal, and left two seasons later.

I doubt Vidic will leave United and even if he does, he wont leave for cheap due to his long commitment to United and for his age, who the heck will bid 20+m for him? City?
And good riddance Neville! I'm so glad you're finally taken out but heck, he still speaks freely to the media, all the nonsense talk and all, trying his best to imitate Fergie.
why gary is still playing for man united? he is not good enough for a place at united.
Sad la- I'll always love Gaz Nev as our cappy-tan!!
Gary Neville is still the club captain at least for the time being i believe

Hmmm, Neville is still good but simply not good enough for United. His lack of pace works against him in the high tempo English game. His crossing is still decent though and his wealth of experience would help to guide the youngsters along in the tactical aspect of the game.
A good start for Vidic as captain...
And he had Torres in his pocket this time...
And he didn't even get a yellow card this time...
Thats a good start.
But his defensive partners O'Shea and Evans let him down or he would have claimed his first clean sheet as a captain.
