The Red Devils are preparing a £25million bid for Tottenham's 24-year-old Croatian midfielder.
United boss Alex Ferguson sees Modric as a young Paul Scholes, an attacking midfielder and ball player who can make United tick.
Fergie was even full of praise for Modric in his programme notes ahead of their 3-1 home win over Spurs on Saturday.
Talking about the 5ft 8in player and other small talents in football he commented: "And I give you another wee man who'll be at Old Trafford this afternoon: Luka Modric, who is playing out of his skin at the moment."
Modric signed for Spurs from Dinamo Zagreb in 2008 after impressing for Croatia in the European Championships.
He signed a six-year contract after the clubs agreed a £16.5m fee.
Modric struggled early in his first season as he was played out of position by Juande Ramos as a deep-lying midfielder and also had knee trouble.
It was only when Harry Redknapp took over and pushed him further forward that his career at White Hart Lane took off.
His start to this season was curtailed by a broken leg in August but he returned in December and has been in great form during Spurs' push for a Champions League spot.
The move for Modric is bad news for Michael Carrick, who looks to have lost favour with Ferguson.
Carrick has only started one of the last five games after two poor performances against Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter-finals.
Spurs boss Redknapp is a huge fan of Carrick and may insist on him being part of any Modric deal.
well, i see Carrick's defensive plays a + for him.. hope he doesn't get squeeze out.
1st flop signing of the season then by Ferguson.................

every player that ferguson is interested is flop to u ah??
If can lower the fee, i'd include Berba (and Hargreaves if they want for free ) in the deal for Modric.

i tot Carrick may be the make-weight??
all these big money buys are making me view SAF with caution. Carrick, berba, veron, forlan....why dun we use our own talents instead of buying from others?

Carrick is still useful as backup. Hargreaves.. When was the last time he played?
YES AH !
carrick form this season is so lousy. in fact lousy is an understatement, that is the extent of his form this season. if can swop, I dun mind swopping modric with carrick, as fergie is interested in milner, who is versatile in the wings and can play in midfield. with fletcher coming of age and anderson still to come back, united midfield is in good hands if milner were to join united. but then modric coming to united will create problems for Nani and park, as he usually play on the left of midfield. but a good problem to have lar for fergie.
can he play in the centre of midfield? if he can play left, he can also play at the right isnt it.
modric is to replace scholes leh......
can throw in Owen also mah................that piece of garbage should be worth a couple pounds.................LOL

it seems OwenH is close to full fitness, but then never appear..
hopefully, he can rest properly, and start next season, else, i think write off liao.
Shortest MU career of an english international, and MU has both of them, the Owens.. sigh.

Michael Owen can still keep. He's experienced and low in salary (20k per week) despite spending longer time on treatment table than on bench.
Hargreaves, on the other hand, face stiff competition to snatch his place back. And he's still not match fit after 2 years. How long more before Fergie's patience runs out?
fergie going to buy milner. anyway got fletcher and anderson still to come back. if he does come back, maybe he can replace gary neville and play at RB.
I hope of these scenarios:
1. Neville retires, handing over captain's armband to Rio
2. Smalling takes over Neville's Number
3. Brown and Vidic swapped Number
4. James Milner is signed and Hargreaves is sold/traded.
5. Berbatov, Foster, Kuzczcak and Tosic sold.
6. Luis Fabiano signed for free from Sevilla (Bosman)
7. Joe Cole signed for free from Chelsea (Bosman)
8. Igor Akinfeev signed for United
9. Michael Owen forced to retire due to injuries
10. Modric signs (takes over his favourite 14) with Carrick travel the opposite direction
11. Valencia upgrade to Number 16
How United 2010-11 squad will look like:
1. Edwin Van der Sar
2. Chris Smalling
3. Patrice Evra
4. James Milner
5. Rio Ferdinand
6. Nemanja Vidic
7. Joe Cole
8. Anderson
9. Luis Fabiano
10. Wayne Rooney
11. Ryan Giggs
12. Igor Akinfeev
13. Ji-Sung Park
14. Luka Modric
15. Wes Brown
16. Antonio Valencia
17. Nani
18. Paul Scholes
19. Danny Welbeck
20. Fabio Da Silva
21. Rafael Da Silva
22. John O'Shea
23. Jonny Evans
24. Darren Fletcher
25. Javier Hernandez
26. Gabriel Obertan
27. Federico Macheda
28. Darron Gibson
Of course it's just my wishes la. Fergie, are you listening?
Akinfeev in a Man Utd shirt !!! What a dream... But CSKA priced him too high. I hope Obertan can rise through the ranks also. Hargreaves can be sold la...
