Darren Ferguson admits Danny Welbeck's loan spell at Preston may have been cut short by injury.
The Manchester United youngster is struggling with a knee problem and suffered a reaction to the complaint when training with his parent club this week.
He had been due to return to Deepdale on Thursday, but has been prevented from doing so.
Welbeck is now set to undergo scans on the troublesome area on Monday, to determine the full extent of the injury, and Ferguson is unsure whether the 19-year-old will be seen again in Preston colours this season.
"Danny has had a reaction to the knee injury again after he trained at United on Wednesday," he told the Lancashire Evening Post.
"The way it is looking at the moment, he will go back there and that will be it.
"Danny is going for another scan on Monday but it's not looking good. It's a blow for the lad because he was really enjoying it here.
"We wish the lad all the best because we don't want this to turn out to be a serious injury. If the scan on Monday shows no operation is needed, there is the possibility that Danny might come back, but I'm not overly optimistic."
