Nine thousand Leeds fans are expected at Old Trafford for the first meeting of the bitter rivals since February 2004 and GMP have listed the fixture as category B, the second-highest risk level.
And while GMP have not insisted on an alcohol ban prior to the game, Superintendent John Graves, the match commander, insists that drunken fans can expect to be arrested.
He said: "Anyone arriving at the stadium drunk will be refused entry and is likely to be arrested.
"In recent weeks, we have been asking local pubs and off-licences to limit their sales and opening times, and advising coach operators of the dangers of transporting drunken fans.
"We are not ordering anyone not to sell alcohol, but we have been working closely with Manchester United, Leeds United and licensed premises to make them aware of our concerns."
GMP have also bracketed next Wednesday's Carling Cup semi-final between United and Manchester City at Eastlands as Category B.
United have been given 5,432 tickets for that fixture.
