Sir Alex Ferguson delivered some more festive cheer on Tuesday with the news that several Reds are back, or close to returning, from injury.
Following the return of Nemanja Vidic, Wes Brown and Rafael at Hull on Sunday, Gary Neville is the latest to bolster United's defensive options. While Jonny Evans and Rio Ferdinand miss Wednesday's game against Wigan, the former is particularly close to making his return.
"We brought two centre-backs back on Sunday and they made a tremendous difference to the defensive part of the side," Sir Alex told his pre-Wigan press conference. "We’ve got Gary Neville now available for tomorrow night, but we’re still hoping to have Evans and Ferdinand back soon. O’Shea may be a bit longer.
"Jonny actually has been training but he felt a tight hamstring the other day so we had to put him on the easy list for a couple of days. But he’s not far away. We’re getting a bit better in terms of the composition of the squad at a time of the year that’s vital to us."
Paul Scholes missed the weekend win over the Tigers after suffering a kick on the hip in training, but is fit for the visit of Roberto Martinez's side, as is fellow midfielder Anderson. Nani is the Reds' only injured forward.
Meanwhile, Edwin van der Sar, who has been missing with a knee injury, has been told to stay in the Netherlands with his wife Annemarie, who is in hospital. "I have told Edwin to stay over there. There is no point in him being here," said Sir Alex. "The best thing is for him to be with his wife. Hopefully she will make a good recovery."
5-0 nia at the moment..... sianz.. where is my 10-0 leh
man u 5-0 wiiners, but can they win the title?
Great play by United, more could be achieved tho. Best goal was by Rafael IMO, anyone saw the guy in the turban grabbing his balls behind Fergie like he was rushing for the loo?
Everyone who started played a good game except Park, I feel that he's just too shy since he came back from injury awhile ago, we're missing Giggs...
man u on fire.
First time I saw United played with such conviction this season... Brilliant display of attacking football and teamwork. And with part of the defense back, It look more normal.
I feel this Rafael was just fantastic in the right-back position. He is fast, defended well, he goes up to assist with the attacking as well... This kid is just amazing and to think he is only 19 yrs old... He seems to have added some body strength to his play... He is more physical now and can withhold or contain those physical challenges better compare to when he first arrive. He is also very adventurous going forward. The goal he scored was very good... He like kind of dance his way pass a few Wigan defenders then finish it with a nice strike... He could have even got 2 on the night but the keeper saved an earlier efford. Now United only waiting for Rio to come back to be at full strength again...
If they can continue or improve on last night's performance... The second half of the season is going to be a very good one...
