United beat Arsenal to coveted Welsh wonderkid
Manchester United have reportedly beaten Arsenal to the signature of Cardiff City starlet Adam Matthews. The 17-year-old was strongly linked with a move to the Premier League during the summer and today the Sun claim United will complete a £5 million deal in January.
The full-back, who can also play in midfield, has made 12 starts for the Championship side. He was recently an unused substitute for the Welsh national side when called up for their friendly with Scotland. Matthews made his Under-21 debut four days after his senior call-up and is widely considered one the brightest prospects in Britain.
The Swansea born starlet will reportedly join United when the window opens in January. Sir Alex Ferguson acted quickly to snap up the youngster because of concerns the player may link up with Arsenal, having lost out to their Premier League rivals when trying to sign Aaron Ramsey in 2008.
