UNITED have a defensive headache ahead of their Premier League opener against Birmingham on Sunday.
With Nemanja Vidic already ruled out, stand-in Jonny Evans returned from Northern Ireland duty with an ankle problem.
And,
with Reds boss Sir Alex Ferguson already denied the services of young
full-back Rafael and Wes Brown and Gary Neville also strggling for
fitness, the champions face a race to get him ready for action.
Northern
Ireland manager Nigel Worthington left the young centre-half out of the
team that drew 1-1 with Israel at Windsor Park on Thursday night to
allow him to return to United for treatment.
“There was no way I was going to risk him from our point of view,” said Worthington.
“With
him being in and around the first team, I wasn’t going to risk him with
Manchester United either. Jonny trained extremely well on Monday and
Tuesday but woke up with a stiff ankle on the day of the game.”
Goalkeeper
Ben Foster is also battling to be fit after withdrawing from the
England squad earlier this week with a minor injury. First choice Edwin
Van der Sar is already ruled out for up to two months with a broken
hand.

is Vidic back or not?
there are still no number 1 RB for this season? is wes brown, o shea or rafael no 1 RB position? at the moment, its o shea, but he is there by default, due to injury to wes brown.
O'shea will do mighty fine!
This won't be a walkover.
Birmingham have recruited some good players like former Scotland captain Barry Ferguson, hardman Lee Bowyer and Joe Hart (loan). Their club record signing Christian Benitez is also dubbed to be as good as Messi.
Plus in recent seasons, United have started slowly, since 07/08 their opening game has ended in draws. Coincidently, in those seasons, the comm shield matches also ended in draws lol. This season's comm shield match was a draw too, the pattern gonna continue?
will it be like utd attacked and attacked, but could not score, just like last season opener against newcastle?
Wayne Rooney will chokeslam the referee and get sent off.

Won't be surprised. It's at OT after all. Plus look at the number of defensive signings Birmingham have made.

PLEA ... Alex McLeish
The Birmingham boss needed to find seats for 15 members of his family and close friends. One call to Manchester United boss Fergie and Big Eck was sorted.
McLeish revealed: "I haven't spoken to Alex this week but I asked him for a few tickets last week and he obliged. "I've family and friends coming down from Scotland. A few came out of the woodwork when they saw the first fixture!
"So that means I'll be in hock to Alex until he comes to St Andrew's. "My son Jon is using a friend's season ticket so I've told him to sit on his hands. My son Jamie and daughter Rebecca will be there too."
McLeish played for Ferguson at Aberdeen and admits Fergie's aura has left a lasting impression on him. He added: "I'm my own man but when you play under a manager like that you can't help but pick up things.
"He set standards pretty high and I have tried to keep to those standards. He called us in one Sunday when we conceded a corner! "He had this amazing will to win and players like me, Willie Miller, Gordon Strachan, Mark McGhee and Jim Leighton were enhanced by his guidance.
"Nobody is as good at doing the hairdryer! I've tried it. If you feel it, let it go. But if you're making it up then it won't feel right. "He is a great psychologist. He would be quite expensive if he charged - but he is my pal."
Ben Foster (knee) or Tomasz Kuszczak will deputise for Edwin van der Sar, while Nani (shoulder) could feature after playing for Portugal in midweek.
Birmingham are also short of defenders, with Martin Taylor and Liam Ridgewell long-term absentees.
Roger Johnson will make his debut but midfielder Lee Bowyer is suspended.
