The Italian giants have turned their back on the Real Madrid hitman to focus their efforts on signing Sevilla's Luis Fabiano.
Milan confirmed they had lodged bids for both players earlier this week, but vice-president Adriano Galliani revealed they are now solely targeting Brazil frontman Fabiano.
Galliani said: "At this point there is only one negotiation standing, and that is Luis Fabiano."
The 28-year-old has a buy-out clause of £25million and Galliani hinted talks between Milan and Sevilla are ongoing.
He added: "Several million euros separate us from him.
"The difference is still there and there's little to say with the exception that we need to reach an agreement on the transfer figure."
United boss Alex Ferguson is desperate to land a big-name summer signing following the loss of Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez.
And he could now turn to Huntelaar — who only moved to the Bernabeu in January — to fill the void they have left.
The 25-year-old smashed 76 goals in 92 games during his time at Ajax before moving to Spain in a £20million deal.
He has hit eight goals in 20 games during his short spell in Madrid so far but has fallen down the pecking order following the arrivals of Ronaldo, Kaka and Karim Benzema.

Huntelaar: On the move?
The Dutch striker only moved to the Santiago Bernabeu from Ajax Amsterdam in January but he has been constantly linked with a move away from Madrid.
AC Milan and United have both been linked with the Holland international but the Rossoneri have ended their interest in the 25-year-old, who scored 76 goals in 96 appearances for Ajax, leaving the way clear for the Red Devils.
With Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka and Olympique Lyonnais forward Karim Benzema arriving at Real this summer Huntelaar has been pushed further down the pecking order and wants to speak to Los Blancos officials before deciding where his future lies.
"Klaas-Jan will return to Madrid on Thursday and then he wants to know what his situation at Real looks like," the striker's agent, Arnold Oosterveer, told Voetbal International.
"There are a lot of rumours around, and there is much interest in him, but the player has yet to make a decision."
