Suggestions that Jose Reina could replace a Manchester United-bound Victor Valdes at Barcelona are to come to an abrupt end with the news that the goalkeeper has agreed a new contract at Camp Nou.
As the established number one for a team that won an unprecedented Spanish treble last season, Valdes has been deep in negotiations with Barca regarding an improved deal.
However, it was recently reported that talks had hit a stumbling block with Valdes demanding an annual salary in the region of €9 million (£7.6 million).
That led to speculation that Valdes could be poised to replace Edwin van der Sar at Old Trafford, with Liverpool and Spain keeper Reina possibly moving back to his former club to work under Josep Guardiola.
However, Valdes’ agent claims a breakthrough has been made in negotiations and the 27-year-old is now ready to commit himself to the Catalunyan club until 2015.
“The contract will be signed any day,” Carvajal told RAC-1.
Valdes graduated from the Barcelona academy and enjoys a tight grip on the number one jersey at Camp Nou after six years as a first-team regular.
