Steve Bruce has thrashed out a £21.5million deal with Real Madrid for Antonio Valencia - but challenged Sir Alex Ferguson to match the valuation if he wants the Wigan winger.
Valencia, 23, is seen by Manchester United as a potential replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo and he has been tracked by a number of suitors.
Aston Villa and Tottenham had asked to be kept informed but, with the two biggest clubs in the world going head-to-head, it seems they are out of the running.
Wigan boss Bruce has been negotiating with Madrid for a few months but this is the first time details of the fee - an £18m downpayment and a further £3.5m in add-ons - have been released.
Bruce hinted a deal was afoot after Saturday's 2-0 defeat at Stoke, when he said: 'It's inevitable that Valencia will go but we'll get good money for him.'
A move to United would give Ferguson cover if Ronaldo works his exit from the Barclays Premier League champions, but if Valencia heads for the Spanish capital the chances of Bernabeu bosses footing the bill for a world-record offer for Ronaldo might sharply diminish.
The cash involved is astonishing given that Ecuador star Valencia has played less than 50 times in the Premier League since Paul Jewell signed him three years ago.
Bruce is keen to start team rebuilding and is therefore anxious to resolve the Valencia issue quickly.

Man Utd has 2 many wingers and midfielders already, with owen hargreaves coming back next season after his injury hell. what Man Utd need is to buy a replacement striker for Tevez if he leave, and a world class goalie to eventually replace VDS when he retire eventually, either the end of next season or the season after. goalie can play up to aged 40, like peter shilton and david seamen.

essien is chelsea's crown jewel, robben too injury prone.. Kaka will cost a bomb, pirlo seems a bit old, xavi is the one can consider..
we still got Vidic's country man, right? also Gibson?
I certainly hope OwenH can come back and re-establish his level. Else, it is so sad cause I do like him. He plays with his heart on his sleeves. total dedication.

Antonio Valencia's agent confirmed Sportsmail's exclusive report that Real Madrid have lodged a £21.5million bid for the winger - but hinted the Wigan star may prefer to stay in England with Manchester United.
A £20m deal is agreed in principle with United for the Ecuadorean, 23, but Madrid have now raised the stakes.
Agent Diego Herrera said: 'When will Antonio leave? It will take two or three weeks, certainly no more than that.
'Wigan know this is an important deal for them. They will speak to the player and look at the options.'

I think Fergie wants to change Ronaldo into a striker for next season... Give him a new role to keep his interest going when Tevez goes... And also he has seen him play as a striker and he seems very good in that position as well... Arsenal didn't know how to mark him well when he play as a striker... And given his speed, can out run a lot of the centre-backs...
Valencia is very fast and he can score as well... I feel he would be a good addition...
