As Ryan Giggs prepares to play his 800th game for Manchester United, Sir Alex Ferguson has backed Wayne Rooney to break his record.
Giggs already tops United's all-time appearance list, having made his Reds debut as a 17-year-old way back in the days of the old First Division in March 1991.
Fergie cannot speak highly enough of the evergreen Giggs, who continues to defy Father Time with his performances at the age of 35. And he feels Rooney has the potential to beat even Welshman's tally.
The England star has already made 228 appearances for United, even though he is just 23, and manager Ferguson said: "Yes, he's still a young man, crikey me. A lot of young players are only just starting their careers at his age. What he has achieved so far is quite amazing. He's got the energy, the desire and he will carry on."
Ferguson marvels at how Rooney is developing as a player by finding new roles to make it even harder for defenders to pick him up.
Giggs is the master when it comes to evolving his positional play to stay in the team. The former winger was named player of the year and he's currently the Premier League's most creative player, operating mainly from his central midfield position.
