Manchester United’s failure to defend their Premier League and Champions League titles this season would equate to straightforward failure, says Wayne Rooney.
The United forward maintains that anything less than a retention of the trophies The Red Devils claimed last season would be an inconceivable slipping of standards at Old Trafford, as he and his team-mates continue their quest for a quintuple of silverware.
United are currently a point clear of Liverpool at the top of the Premier League table, with a game in hand over their rivals, and are through to the quarter-finals of the Champions League in which they face Porto.
And Rooney says the ethos of United dictates that winning – and subsequently defending those two titles – is a must.
"If you don't manage to retain a trophy you can't deem it as anything but a failure," Rooney told Inside United.
"You have already proved you are good enough to do it, so it just drives you on to win more.
"The history of the club demands that we continue winning. I don't think the players would ever let themselves become complacent."
Any club that has a history that demands losing?
EPL at least please!
