Sir Alex Ferguson says the agonies that come with battling for honours are only worthwhile if Manchester United come out on top.
United have two trophies to their name this term – the Club World Cup and Carling Cup – and are also battling for silverware in the FA Cup, Champions League and Premier League.
Ferguson’s side gave the chasing pack a glimmer of light with defeat to Liverpool on Saturday and the Scot is content to go through the wringer if it results in success.
"You only really relish it if you end up winning," he told Inside United. "You're prepared to go through the agony as long as you end up on top.
"It can be edgy, but you have to accept the challenge. Being there is the greatest thing and that's what we are all striving for."
