Sir Alex Ferguson has spoken of his happiness after Manchester United defeated Inter 2-0 on Wednesday.
United had to work hard to progress, but goals from Nemanja Vidic and Cristiano Ronaldo did prove to be enough to see the defending European champions move into the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
Ferguson, who is eying his third European title, admits he was relieved to get through to the next round after what he called a difficult draw.
“I thought it was a really difficult draw given their experience, so we are happy to get through, it was a good result for us,” he told the Manchester Evening News after the match.
“We started very well and I thought it could be one of those nights when we are going to score a few goals.
“But then we started doing flicks and passing balls into space where no one was and back heels – it was practice football. Inter should have been level at half time.
“We played a team at its maximum potential in terms of experience and they played to their maximum. To get through that is a big plus because we will be better in the next round.”
The Red Devils now turn their attentions back to domestic matters, with Liverpool set to visit Old Trafford in a crucial Premier League match this weekend.
