Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson thinks that Rio Ferdinand would benefit from more games in a bid to return to peak form.
The defender has not played regularly since sustaining a back injury in December, but he impressed his manager with his performance in the Carling Cup final, managing to play the full 120 minutes.
"I wanted to play Rio in the Carling Cup final because he's not played a lot of games since December," the Reds boss said in his pre-Newcastle press conference.
"I needed to get him back into his rhythm. He's a big lad and big defenders need to play games.
"Now he's got a really good game under his belt, I hope Ferdinand and [Nemanja] Vidic will be a solid partnership between now and the end of the season," he added.
