Knee injury: Nicky Butt
Nicky Butt looks certain to miss out against his former club Manchester United this week and could be struggling to play his part in Newcastle's fight for survival this season.
The former England international is waiting for the results of a scan after he injured medial knee ligament damage in yesterday's defeat at Bolton.
The stand-in Newcastle captain is expected to be ruled out for at least another fortnight, which is another massive blow for caretaker boss Chris Hughton who is already without Joey Barton, Danny Guthrie and the suspended Kevin Nolan.
Another former United favourite Alan Smith could now start his first game for nine months in central midfield on Wednesday.
Hughton said: 'Nicky has tweaked his knee. We won’t know the extent of it until later today, but, of course, we’re hopeful it’s very minor. In the past it’s an area we’ve suffered in.'
Meanwhile Newcastle defender Steven Taylor has warned his team-mates they will be relegated unless they are prepared to fight for their careers.
The England Under-21 captain says Newcastle players have to stand up to the reality of their perilous position or face the consequences.
Taylor said: 'This has to bring out the men in the dressing room. We’ll see exactly who wants to play for this football club. The lads need to show character and show exactly how much playing for Newcastle means to them.
'We’re in a serious relegation fight. We’ve lost at Bolton in a game we should have won. That didn’t happen and now we have to dust ourselves off for Manchester United.
'They are the best team in the world. Now we have to be men and stand up to that.'
if I not wrong, after this game is the mega ones with Inter and Liverpool..
if we win the next 3, will be pure ecstasy...
Wayne Rooney is available for Manchester United’s midweek Premier League visit to Newcastle after shaking off a virus.
This untimely ailment prevented the 23-year-old playing in United’s Carling Cup win against Tottenham at the weekend.
The England striker recently returned from five weeks out with a hamstring injury and played a minor role in the Champions League first leg draw against Inter last week before his Wembley setback.
Rooney participated in full training in the build-up to Wednesday’s match at St James' Park where United can move 10 points clear if nearest title rivals Chelsea and Liverpool both lose and they beat Newcastle.
John O’Shea is the only injury concern for Sir Alex Ferguson as the utility player wrestles with a lingering heel injury.
"He's got a problem with his heel, it's settled down after a day or so," Ferguson said of O'Shea.
"He might need some new insoles for his boots to see if that helps, and he should be okay.
"Other than that everyone is fine for tomorrow [Wednesday] and we look forward to a very tough game."

Not 4th March...
It should be 5th March...
Kevin Nolan will serve the second leg of a three-match ban, while Damien Duff (calf), Michael Owen (ankle ligaments), Habib Beye (ankle), Danny Guthrie (hamstring), Joey Barton and Xisco (both fractured metatarsal) are still out.

So 4-1 for me.
The
24-year-old former Inter hitman scored against the Red Devils earlier
this term and is hoping for a similar outcome at St. James' Park this
evening.
"I scored against them on the opening day of the season," Martins told the club's official website.
"I'm
not the only one who's going to play, but it would be great to do it
again. I want to score the goals that will help Newcastle get out of
this [position]."
The Magpies are only two points clear of the
drop zone and, while the Nigerian international recognises that
ensuring the Toon Army remain in the top-flight for next season will be
tough, he feels it is far from impossible.
"It's going to be
difficult now because we lost at Bolton [Wanderers], and we have Man U
in the next game,” he explained. “We'll see what's going to happen. It
will be tough but we have to stay together."
