Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed that goalkeeper Ben Foster broke a finger in training last week
Foster was expected to play some part in United's two games in this week's World Club Championship in Japan but was forced to pull out of the squad after suffering the injury last Thursday.
It is the latest in a catalogue of fitness woes for the 25-year-old, who missed almost all of last season following cruciate surgery.
It is not clear how long Foster will be missing, or how many Premier League games he will be sidelined for, if any, but the timing comes as a blow after Ferguson last week revealed that he expects Foster to push Edwin van der Sar for the number one jersey next season.
Foster would have been expected to play at least one game in Japan, but it is now expected that Tomasz Kuszczak and Van der Sar will be given one game each in the competition which gets under way for United on Thursday morning.
