Fergie Pleads With Utd Fans: Stop Abusing Wenger
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has urged the club's fans to stop abusing Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger.
Sir Alex Ferguson has welcomed the heightened security arrangements put in place by Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium ahead of Manchester United's visit to North London on Saturday.
When United last played at the Emirates, manager Ferguson complained that the Arsenal fans were allowed too close to the visitors' dugout.
However, while the behaviour of the Arsenal fans did not impress the Scot, he also concedes that United's supporters often cross the line when their team take on the Gunners.
There is one vile 'song' in particular that United fans regularly abuse Wenger with, and Ferguson wants them to cut it out.
"I hope it stops," he said. "There has been a focus on fans' chants, not just towards Arsene Wenger but other managers too.
"It is ridiculous. The police should be doing more.
"When you consider the chants that have been levelled at us about Munich you would think United fans would understand very well the sensitivity of the situation.
"I don't agree with it at all. Hopefully the fans appreciate when it comes to me too.
"I would like to think other clubs share the same view as I have in terms of criticism towards the manager. There is enough to admire in our game without denigrating people."
Having conducted an internal review, Arsenal intend to station another three stewards immediately behind the dugout, and have an 'ejection squad' standing by to act if any fans misbehave.
Ferguson has welcomed this, but feels the design of the Emirates Stadium lends itself to potentially inflammatory confrontations.
"The problem is the fans are right behind you. They are almost in the dugout really," he said.
"It is quite right they have improved the security because last year was pretty unsavoury. In fact, I think it was nasty.
"I can turn myself off from it and concentrate on the game. But I knew what was going on.
"When the stewards tried to intervene they were attacked by some Arsenal fans. They had to remove our stewards from there and bring their own in.
"It should not happen when you build a modern stadium like that. It is too open for my liking.
"It is a weakness in the planning that you don't provide safety for the visiting substitutes and staff."

Arsenal v Man United: Nicklas Bendtner backs Arsene Wenger's side to bounce back
Nicklas Bendtner is confident Arsenal can beat Manchester United and prove their Premier league title chase is back on track.
Confidence is high: Nicklas Bendtner insists that Arsenal are not worried despite their recent run in the League.
Arsenal host the defending champions at the Emirates Stadium and need victory to prevent their season from unravelling. The Londoners have suffered three league defeats already, leaving little margin for error, but Bendtner insists they should not be written off just yet.
"We still believe we can win the title and it will be like that until the season finishes. We owe that to ourselves," he said. "We want to win it for everyone. We are very young but we can still prove people wrong. We shouldn't be written off yet. We're very strong and we have played well against big teams this season. It will be no different on Saturday.
"After what happened against Tottenham and Stoke people can get that impression that things aren't going right but we don't feel that way ourselves. We are strong and believe we have another chance tomorrow to show that we are united and can get back to winning ways."
With the injured Emmanuel Adebayor and suspended Robin van Persie unavailable, Bendtner will spearhead Arsenal's assault against the defending champions. Arsene Wenger will choose between Carlos Vela and Theo Walcott to play alongside Bendtner, although if the England winger fails to recover from a shoulder injury the options would be narrowed further.
At just 20 years old it is a lot of responsibility for Bendtner to shoulder but the Dane is relishing the chance to nail down his place in the team. "I always feel confident, whoever I play. I'll play to my strength and the team will play as a unit," he said.
"If we all play well that should be enough. But I want to do the best I can. If I play I'd like to score. It would be fantastic to score against Man United. If I can score and help us win the game then I'll be very happy.
"If you play well, you keep your place so you have to keep working hard. It's the same for every striker, there's no free pass in every top club. I love playing for Arsenal."
Mikael Silvestre is the latest player to be added to Arsenal's casualty list after the defender suffered a broken nose against Fenerbahce. Wenger must decide whether to gamble on the 31-year-old defender against his former club while Arsenal captain William Gallas is struggling with a hamstring problem and is rated 50-50.
Bacary Sagna remains a slight doubt but goalkeeper Manuel Almunia has recovered from a sickness bug.
