Fergie: Rejected the England job on 3 occasions.
Sir Alex Ferguson was offered the England manager's job on three occasions, according to David Davies, the former FA executive director.
Davies says he first targeted the Manchester United manager for the job after Terry Venables left the post following Euro 96. However, Davies says Ferguson rejected the approach, and dismissed two further offers after Glenn Hoddle and Kevin Keegan resigned in 1999 and 2000 respectively.
"After Terry Venables, I wanted Fergie," Davies said. "I was absolutely clear he was the best person for the job. I was a personal friend of Sir Roland Smith, then chairman of Manchester United, and he didn't totally kick the idea into touch. I was vaguely encouraged."
"I don't think he ever came near becoming the England manager. The idea of Alex leading England out at Hampden is somewhat far-fetched. He is a very, very proud Scot. He was, I think, tickled by the idea, though.
"When I recruited Keegan, I would have loved Ferguson to become manager. But the conversations were very brief."
Well, he if were manager of England today, he'd certainly keep them star-studded egos in check
capello is doing a great job now.
i dun think he would even consider becoming england manager. and i wouldn't either if i was in his position
