Dimitar Berbatov has hit back at accusations that he is lazy, saying 'real quality doesn't need to show effort'.
Berbatov is set to make his debut for Manchester United against Liverpool at Anfield on Saturday following his £30.75 million move from Tottenham and few would doubt that he has the talent to justify the move to the European champions.
But critics have suggested on many occasions that the Bulgaria striker does not put in enough effort on the field.
However, Berbatov insists that he does not need to chase around the field as he prefers to play a thinking game.
"Sometimes people would say that I am lazy, but it is not true," he told GQ Sport.
"My body language can be confusing.
"I may not need to run non-stop, because there is no need to chase unreachable balls.
"I like to play with my head. It's not about laziness - it's about the cleverness of the player.
"Real quality doesn't need to show effort."
Berbatov has also been accused of being sulky and aloof in the past and, while he admits he is 'difficult', he says he is working on his social skills.
Asked how he behaves when his team loses, he said: "You don't want to be around me.
"I stay at home. I don't talk. I just sit and think about what I did wrong. I am in a terrible mood.
"If there's anyone around, it's much better that they are in another room.
"People sometimes think I'm aloof. Some of the players get me wrong. But it is true that I am difficult.
"I have many moods and sometimes I don't want to talk to anyone. At Tottenham, the players were fantastic from the first day - they supported me every step.
"I know sometimes I am not the guy that the other players want to see socially and I try to work on that."
ltr rooney listen liao camp also le
Dimitar Berbatov would not have signed for Manchester City no matter how much they had offered for him on transfer deadline day.
"I would not even have thought about Manchester City," said Berbatov, who is expected to make his debut at Liverpool on Saturday.
"My only goal was to come to Manchester United.
"My ambitions and goals are big and I want to fulfil them at the biggest club in the world.
"I heard about the offer Manchester City made and the money they want to spend.
"I was surprised but it did not make any difference to me. I just wanted to come here.
"That was my only goal - and I achieved it."
good lawls
i still don't think he is worth 30m+
yeah..same here.. but i think Manchester United cant help it when Spurs are being unreasonable and with Manchester City joining the race during the fianl lap after getting such a huge injection of cash. Robinho's move to Manchester City really stunned me. I thought he was going to end up at Chelsea all along >.< But i guess the Chelsea management infuriated Real Madrid by starting to take orders for Robinho's shirt on their official website even though negotiations were still going on. I hate to imagine the impact that Manchester City is going to have on the transfer market with all that money. Prices for players are going to hit a new high definitely >.<
