Manchester United's Owen Hargreaves has pulled out of Friday night's UEFA Super Cup clash with Zenit St Petersburg due to an injury setback.
The England midfielder suffered a recurrence of his long-standing knee injury in training.
He was due to make a 45-minute appearance in Monaco and there had been some speculation Hargreaves could even find his way into Fabio Capello's squad for next month's World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Croatia despite Sir Alex Ferguson rejecting the theory on Thursday.
But any hope of Hargreaves donning the Three Lions again has now been squashed, with the midfielder missing the Zenit game on Friday.
The extent of the 27-year-old's problem is not clear but his absence is a blow given Michael Carrick is also out with an ankle injury.
Hargreaves will certainly be frustrated as he has missed United's entire pre-season so far.
The former Bayern Munich man has had injections to ease a tendinitis problem that first surfaced last summer, just after his move to Old Trafford.
Having sat out United's pre-season tour to South Africa, it was thought Hargreaves would be available for United's early season games.
That may still be the case given the Red Devils are not in action again until they visit Liverpool on September 13 but there are bound to be concerns over the £18million man's long-term availability.
sad... i hope he don't end up like saha
omg y is this happenning!
sell saha le, and still haven buy ani players!
i think saha already sold rite?.correct me if im wrong..tks..
fergie please buy more players.. if not this EPL sure boring
I think if he don't play a bit part tonight, its only because Fergie don't want him to be selected for England duty these next 10 days... Fergie want him to stay back and rest to recover fully. But if he plays, it will be harder for Fergie to tell Capello that he is not 100% fit and don't selecte him... lol
One of Fergie's oldest trick... Hargreaves will be back and ready for Pool...

Not another Saha please!
Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has expressed his frustration with Owen Hargreaves’ latest setback.
The midfielder has been beset by knee problems since arriving at Old Trafford from Bayern Munich last summer.
A summer of rehabilitation appeared to place Hargreaves on the road to recovery and he was tipped to feature in Friday’s Super Cup clash with Zenit St Petersburg.
However, the England man was forced out on the eve of the game after reporting discomfort in his knee and the news came as a blow to Ferguson.
"He said he felt his knee and that he was not fit enough to play,” said the Scot.
"There is nothing you can to do about it. If a player declares himself unfit you have to accept that.
"We'd have liked to play him and get him back into the run of things and playing football again.
"To be honest, he has not played enough football in the last year. He'd like to get back and it is disappointing."
