  Sir Alex Ferguson’s squad for this opening day fixture has been severely depleted by the withdrawals of Cristiano Ronaldo (ankle), Louis Saha (knee), Owen Hargreaves (knee), Park Ji-Sung (knee), Nani (suspension) and Anderson (Olympics).

  However, the recovery of the talismanic Wayne Rooney and compatriot Michael Carrick from the virus the pair picked up whilst on tour in Africa has given the Red Devils manager a timely boost in the face of such a significant list of absentees. 

  Last starting XI (vs. Portsmouth): Van Der Sar, Neville (Brown 66), Ferdinand, Vidic, Evra, Fletcher, O'Shea (Carrick 66), Scholes, Giggs, Nani (Campbell 79), Tevez.  
  Subs Not Used: Kuszczak, Evans, Possebon, R Da Silva.

  Unluckily for the Magpies, the attacking crisis currently occurring at Old Trafford is repeated by Kevin Keegan’s side with Michael Owen (illness), Mark Viduka (Achilles), and Shola Ameobi (hamstring) all out of contention for this fixture. Young midfielder Andy Carroll (ankle) also joins this attacking trio on the sidelines.

  The Newcastle manager, however, will be able to select the club’s two new Argentinean internationals Jonas Gutiérrez and Fabricio Coloccini for this game, who along with former Metz defender Sebastian Bassong and ex-Liverpool midfielder Danny Guthrie are all in line to make their competitive debuts for the Toon.
