£3m Between Berba & United
According to the Daily Express, only £3million currently block Berbatov from making his much-anticipated return to the Champions League with the title holders.
That marks significant progress since talks commenced earlier in the summer, at which time Spurs were refusing to sell and accused United of tapping-up their star striker.
But relations have gradually improved since then, despite the Lilywhites pressing ahead with their complaint over United's approach for the Bulgarian international, and only an exact payment plan now remains to be hammered out.
The Red Devils have raised their offer to £25million and Tottenham have lowered the asking price to £28million - a significant decrease on the £35million they were once thought to be holding out for.
However, the Londoners are unlikely to drop their evaluation any further due to their ongoing tussle over Andrei Arshavin, for whom Zenit St Petersburg are demanding no less than £21million.
But a compromise may yet be reached between United and Spurs in the form of performance-based extras, similar to the additional £1.3million tacked onto Robbie Keane's recent transfer to Liverpool.
Sir Alex Ferguson hopes to have Berbatov in his squad for this weekend's Premier League opener against Newcastle United. -

Berba Demands Devils Switch
The Bulgarian hitman has been edging ever closer to Old Trafford over the past few days, as negotiations between United and Spurs have entered the latter stages.
It has been reported that only a fee remains to be agreed, and that the eventual sum will likely be a compromise between the £25million offer and the £28million asking price.
However, the Lilywhites are reluctant to strengthen their Premier League rivals and are supposedly entertaining the option of selling to Barcelona instead.
But latest reports claim Berbatov is eager to join the Red Devils and has made his desire known to the men in charge at White Hart Lane.
"Dimi’s decided to put in a transfer request," a friend of the ex-Bayer Leverkusen player told The Sun.
"He can’t wait to go to Old Trafford and play for United.
"He feels he behaved professionally throughout this period. He has never spoken publicly on the situation out of respect for Tottenham.
"But he does not want to miss out on the start of United’s season and he feels that was his only option left."
