Liverpool’s record goalscorer Ian Rush has risked the wrath of the Anfield faithful by comparing Wayne Rooney to the best player in The Kop’s history – Kenny Dalglish.
Rush was speaking ahead of the new season, where he expects Fernando Torres and Rooney to go toe-to-toe as two of the stars of the campaign.
Torres has been likened to both Rush and Dalglish after making a spectacular start to his Liverpool career; Rush for his pace, finishing and work ethic, Dalglish for his vision and link-up play.
Rush believes Rooney may have greater claim for the Dalglish tag though, insisting the United man deserves more credit than he gets for the form of Cristiano Ronaldo.
“I would liked to have played alongside Rooney,” Rush told The Daily Star.
“He’s not the quickest, like a Fernando Torres or a Cristiano Ronaldo, but he creates a lot of goals.
“He can take a lot of the pressure on himself when played as a lone striker.
“I really loved playing with Kenny Dalglish because he always knew when to feed the ball to me.
“Rooney has got similar attributes of knowing when to hold up the ball and when to put it through at the right time.
“I’m a big admirer of Rooney. Wayne is the perfect foil for Ronaldo.”
