Silvestre has been at United since signing from Inter Milan in 1999 and
has won four league titles and two FA Cups with the club.
However,
he suffered a serious knee injury last season which limited him to just
three Premier League starts and ensured he spent most of the season
watching from the sidelines.
Whilst Silvestre is a versatile
defender able to play as a left back or centre back, United are well
stocked in both areas and possessed the best defensive record in the
league last season.
Indeed with Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand
forming an impressive pairing at centre back and with Patrice Evra in
superb form at left back, Silvestre’s days at Old Trafford appear to be
numbered.
The People reports that West Ham have taken notice of
this fact and are willing to meet United’s valuation of £2million for
the player who will be out of contract at the end of next season.
West
Ham may be in the hunt for a centre back as reports linking Anton
Ferdinand with a move away from Upton Park continue to circulate, with
Tottenham Hotspur believed to be favourites to sign the defender.
Silvestre,
meanwhile, had been linked with a move back to France with Bordeaux
although it is believed that the French side were unable to afford
Silvestre’s wage demands.
