The former United striker did not have the best preparation going into Germany 2006, it is fair to say.
A training-ground spat with Cristiano Ronaldo and a heated dispute with Ferguson resulted in the Holland hitman being sold to Real Madrid prior to the commencement of the tournament.
The former PSV Eindhoven endured a terrible time in Deutschland, relegated to the bench for the majority after falling out with Netherlands boss Marco van Basten.
Van Nistelrooy embarked on a self-imposed international exile after 2006, insisting he could not play for the Oranje while van Basten was coach.
But the 31-year-old has since relented, and is optimistic ahead of this month’s European Champions finals.
“I’ve never said I didn’t want to play for the national team,” he insisted. “Right now I’m far calmer than two years ago and that was because at United I was going through a s**t period.
“And at that time, with a big tournament, that was something I certainly didn’t need. I tried hard to reject everything but it only worked to a certain extent.
“Then on top of that I had a conflict with Dutch coach Marco van Basten. Now I feel a lot better and I believe in our success.” -
