The Ghanaian born poster-boy of American soccer had a trial with United
in December of 2006, but was deemed not quite ready for the rigours of
elite football.
Now, still only 18, Adu is working hard on
making a name for himself in Europe amidst the ongoing turmoil at
Portuguese club Benfica.
"Some English clubs were interested in
me when I first emerged as a footballer. Manchester United were in
touch but perhaps Sir Alex Ferguson believed I was too young to make
the jump," said Adu.
"But Wayne Rooney is my idol. I always
watch his games now I'm in Europe with Benfica. I hope I can swap
shirts with Rooney on Wednesday."
Adu was among 22 players picked for the U.S. soccer team's exhibition game at England next week.
