PHIL NEVILLE is desperate to end Everton’s big-gun hoodoo — and earn himself a pat on the back off his big brother.
David Moyes’ side face Chelsea tonight knowing victory will keep alive their slender dreams of a top-four finish — and effectively kill off the Londoners’ title hopes. And that would make the Goodison skipper flavour of the month with brother Gary, whose Manchester United side would have one hand firmly on the Premier League title again if Everton win.
There is no doubt Phil — at 31 two years younger than Gary — would much prefer to see the title stay with his former club at Old Trafford than head south even though his main focus is on Goodison glory.
Neville admitted: “We have not beaten a top four team this season and if we are to have any aspirations of finishing fourth — and that is still a possibility — then we have got to change things. “But the fact we haven’t beaten one of those sides above us is not because we are lacking quality. Far from it. It has just been lapses of concentration at key moments.
For example, Manchester United beat us twice with goals in the last couple of minutes, while Liverpool beat us here with a late penalty. “Having said that, it still does not change anything. Our record against the big four has not been good enough.
Everton's former United keeper Tim Howard can equal Neville Southall’s club record of 15 clean sheets in a season if he shuts out Chelsea tonight. It is a tough ask as they have not stopped them scoring since 2004. And Howard himself has shelved all thoughts of a place in the Goodison record books — and is merely focused on helping his side regain winning ways.
Please don't OG tonight!
