Rooney cemented himself in Everton folklore with a glorious last-minute winner against then-champions Arsenal, which at the time made him the youngest goal scorer in the history of the Premier League at 16 years and 360 days.
It was immediately apparent that the boy was a very special talent
and the Merseyside club were quickly relieved of their new crown jewel.
Kenwright
admitted that he is still anguishing over the fact that they were
unable to hang on to Rooney, even though they received a king's ransom
for him, as his made him the most expensive for a teenage footballer
ever. Hope springs eternal, however, and the Everton chief insists that
the prodigal son could return one day.
"David Moyes has always
said to me: 'One day Wayne Rooney will come back to Everton.'," he
said. "Why not? Those four or five days when I knew he wanted to go
were without doubt the worst few days of my football life."
The
mercurial forward was back to his very best yesterday, scoring two
goals and clicking with Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez seamlessly
during the 4-0 demolition job over Aston Villa.
