Concern over quintet
Fingers will be crossed for five United players ahead of Tuesday's trip to face AS Roma in the Champions League.
Michael Carrick, Patrice Evra and Rio Ferdinand were all withdrawn in a triple substitution during Saturday's 4-0 win over Aston Villa. United then played the last five minutes with ten men after Ryan Giggs also left the field.
"I had to make the changes because of injuries," said Sir Alex Ferguson.
"Carrick, Rio and Patrice Evra all had injuries and then Giggs got injured towards the end. With the rain continually coming down, the pitch was starting to prove very heavy and that can be a problem with hamstrings. Hopefully they'll be all right (for Rome)."
The fifth player causing fresh concern for the manager is Edwin van der Sar. The Dutchman missed the Villa match, leaving Tomasz Kuszczak to start in goal with Ben Foster - who is ineligible for Europe - on the bench.
"Edwin van der Sar may be a doubt for Tuesday," admitted Sir Alex.
"He’s got a groin problem again, it’s happened two or three times in the last few weeks. We'll see how he is over the next few days. Not risking him today gives us a better chance."
Oh man...Evra and Rio doubtful, thats not good.
When will they play against us at home?
I hope at least a draw this wed, then hantam them when they come to OT!
Roma captain Totti out of United Champions League clash
Down and out: Totti will miss Tuesday's Champions League clash with United
Roma have been dealt a massive blow ahead of Tuesday's Champions League clash with Manchester United after captain Francesco Totti was ruled out with a thigh strain.
Totti played the full 90 minutes of Roma's 1-1 draw at Cagliari on Saturday with heavy strapping on his knee but was spotted clutching the back of his left thigh several times. And the club later confirmed Totti will miss Tuesday's quarter-final first-leg tie in Rome and is a major doubt for the return leg at Old Trafford on April 9.
"At the end of yesterday's encounter, Francesco Totti complained of a pain in the flexor of his left thigh,' said a club statement.
"In the morning of Sunday March 30 he was subjected to tests that highlighted a muscular injury in the cavity of the left thigh flexor. The player will have to have a period of rest and the situation will be monitored over the next few days."
Totti's loss is a big blow to Italy's sole Champions League survivor. He is their top scorer in Serie A this term with 14 goals and he picked up the European Golden Boot last season with 26 league strikes.
The injury is also a major blow to Roma's Serie A title ambitions. They currently trail leaders Inter Milan by four points.

Woah.
Its good that they are still chasing the Serie A... Like that they cannot rest too many players unlike AC Milan last year when they rested the whole team before they met United... I hope the same thing for Barcelona too in the La Liga...
hopefully, the fans/players will all come out of this encounter safe.
last time round, we rushed vidic back and our backline was in disarray.
this time round, different lor.
Spalletti want revenge on Manchester United to wipe out the most painful memory of his life.
ROMA boss Luciano Spalletti wants Champions League revenge on Manchester United to wipe out the most painful memory of his life. The Italians were crushed 7-1 in an historic night at Old Trafford last season as United steamrollered their way into the semi-finals.
Alex Ferguson’s side face Roma again at the same stage of this year’s competition tomorrow and Spalletti admitted his ENTIRE team had prayed to be drawn against the Red Devils. He said: “When I heard we would face Manchester I put my arms in the air and shouted ‘Hell, yes, at last!’
“Finally we have the chance to put things right. “This is the perfect opportunity for us to wipe out the memory of last year. “We’ve taken this draw as a matter of pride. There is a moral here and that is in life you always get the chance to make up for what happened in the past. This is our chance to find peace. “We can reverse the pain we have had in our hearts and now we can free ourselves from it. We’ve carried this inside for a year now and we can get rid of it.”
Ironically, United faced Roma in the group stage this season, drawing 1-1 in Rome and winning 1-0 at Old Trafford. And Spalletti risked the wrath of United’s fans by describing their triumph last season as a “freak” result.
He added: “The result made it the worst night of my career — even though in terms of the team’s performance I’ve seen worse. “I felt so much sadness for my players because they didn’t deserve to lose so badly.
“United were able to get the maximum benefit from their efforts. They had 10 shots on target and scored seven goals and that’s not normal. It was an anomaly. “United played a magnificent game but it was such a bitter experience for my players and the ambience around our club.”
Spalletti insists he is ready to face United with a loaded gun. He added: “United can win everything and beat anyone but we also have some bullets in our gun.”
Roma fired well as they dumped Real Madrid to reach the last eight. And Spalletti added: “I always rely on a collective performance. It’s not about the best 11 players but the best team of 11.”
Silvestre a surprise addition.
Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar looks set to return to the side against Roma in the Champions League on Tuesday.
Van der Sar was on the flight to Italy on Monday after missing the 4-0 Barclays Premier League victory against Aston Villa with a groin injury.
Michael Carrick, Patrice Evra, Rio Ferdinand and Ryan Giggs all travelled after coming off on Saturday with knocks.
Mikael Silvestre was a surprise addition to the party after recovering from a knee ligament injury, sustained in September.
However Nani was again missing and ruled out of the quarter-final first-leg match because of a thigh strain.
Manchester United (from): Van der Sar, Evra, Hargreaves, Ferdinand, Brown, Ronaldo, Anderson, Rooney, Giggs, Park, Vidic, Carrick, Scholes, Pique, O'Shea, Silvestre, Kuszczak, Tevez, Eagles, Heaton, Welbeck.
ZOMGWTF silvestre can be fit to play, how come neville can't ='(
Edwin van der Sar, Ryan Giggs and Patrice Evra all appeared to come through training unscathed as United spent an hour on the Stadio Olimpico pitch on Monday night.
Michael Carrick, however, was forced to watch from the sidelines after picking up an injury in the Reds’ weekend win over Aston Villa.
Earlier on Monday, Sir Alex Ferguson admitted there was some uncertainty surrounding Giggs and Evra’s fitness but neither showed any sign of discomfort during the evening session. The Reds began with light stretching before progressing to some basic ball work and a small-sided game.
Mikael Silvestre, with only two Reserves games under his belt since damaging cruciate ligaments last September, looked sharp, as did Rio Ferdinand, despite nursing a black eye sustained during Saturday’s league win.
well hope we make it throught this one with a clean sheet.. xD
this 1 still need to be sticky ? since its tml
hopefully we will get an away goal or two. it will be a great help.

AS Roma will look to exorcise the ghosts of last season when they face Manchester United FC in the quarter-finals for a second successive season. The Italian side won 2-1 at the Stadio Olimpico in the first leg before an unceremonious 7-1 defeat in the return. The sides met in the group stage this year too with the English champions winning 1-0 at Old Trafford before a 1-1 draw in Rome.
