Mikel : United tried to wreck my career
Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel insists it would be extra sweet if The Blues pip Manchester United to the title this season, claiming Sir Alex Ferguson’s men tried to ‘wreck’ his career.
The Nigeria midfielder is available for Chelsea’s massive clash with Liverpool on Sunday, a must-win game if they are to keep pace with United and Arsenal.
It could have been rather different for Mikel though after a transfer struggle between United and Chelsea, which eventually saw FIFA settle the dispute – with The Blues paying £12 million to their Premier League rivals for the midfielder’s services.
Mikel still recalls how The Red Devils showed little care for his future in order to drag out the transfer situation, and he admits the memory of that time is still an open wound.
“All United were after was money. I didn’t see why they wanted to wreck my career,” he said in The News of the World.
“The thing is, I didn’t know the reason why United had to drag the whole thing out. It didn’t make any sense.
“FIFA didn’t let me train with either team so I was training alone in my neighbourhood.
“But Chelsea fought for me and when people do things like that, it’s difficult to abandon them.
“That’s why I’ll be at Chelsea for a very long time.”
