United signs Angolan striker

United has reached agreement with Petro Athletico of Luanda to sign Mateus Alberto Contreiras Goncalves – "Manucho."
The 24-year-old Angolan international striker, who has scored twice in 10 appearances for his country, has agreed personal terms and will join the Club in January on a 3-year agreement. An application for a work permit will be made in due course.
He was top goalscorer in the last two seasons of the GiraBola, finishing with 16 goals for Petro Luanda in 2006 and 15 goals this year. Manucho will be part of the Angolan squad for the African Nations Cup in January.
Sir Alex Ferguson is delighted by the new arrival, saying: “We have had Manucho here for a 3-week trial and have been impressed enough to offer him a 3-year contract.
"He is a tall, agile, quick forward and through contacts that Carlos [Queiroz] has was brought to our attention around six months ago”

Indeed, unless he performs outstandingly well for his country at next month's African Nations Cup, United may not even get a work permit for the player - who has been spotted by Ferguson's assistant Carlos Queiroz and would almost certainly be loaned to a club in Portugal to overcome immediate administration issues.
"We hope he does well in the African Nations Cup because, as it is at the moment, he has to play enough games to qualify for a work permit," added the United manager.
"We have had him in for three weeks, and he has done exceptionally well.
"He has done very well training with the first team and playing in a couple of practice matches.
"It is always difficult to assess it completely. But there is good potential there. He has good assets. He is 6ft 2in; he is quick, aggressive and very agile - so there is something to work on.
"If we can get the work permit we can map out a future for him, but I wouldn't see him as a first-team player this season." -

I don't think he cost a bomb right since he was signed after a 3-week trial thing... Probably 1/4 of Dong's transfer fee...

thats nice, if we can get him in by the transfer window with work permit..but i too never heard or seen him play, and 2 goals in 10 international doesn;t really excites me..

Or maybe his team just suck. Luca Toni sucked before Fiorentina becoz his team sucked, but when he moved to Fiorentina he then rose to fame, not becoz he improved dramatically in his late 20's but rather becoz his team-mates can supply him with better chances bah
