Manchester United skipper Ryan Giggs has defended Cristiano Ronaldo's decision to take a penalty against Derby County yesterday even as Carlos Tevez was on a hat-trick.
RonaldoÂ’s decision to take the penalty last evening against Derby County may have a sparked a debate in the media about the Portuguese being selfish, but not in the dressing room.
The Red Devils were leading 3-1 when the referee awarded a penalty to United, with Carlos Tevez on a hat-trick.
The United number seven scored from the spot and added his name to the scorers' list, when there were suggestions that Tevez - himself good from the spot - should have been allowed.
Captain Ryan Giggs spoke out in support of Ronaldo saying: “Penalty takers should always take penalties, simple as that. If we got an important penalty in the next couple of weeks then Cristiano’s scoring one today will give him the confidence to do it again.”
Central defender Rio Ferdinand believes that one must keep aside the sentiments while playing football.
“It’s professionalism. If the game was 1-1, Ronaldo would have taken the penalty. Sentiment doesn’t really come into it.
“We’re a professional team and I’ sure it means nothing to Carlos.”
Manager Sir Alex Ferguson agreed with his players and said: "Cristiano is the regular penalty kick taker and I can understand him wanting to take it.
"It would have been great for Carlos to get his hat-trick, but itÂ’s also important for Ronaldo to keep his goalscoring run going.
“When you’re on a run like Cristiano is (12 goals in the last nine matches) you want him to keep it going. It’s the same for any player; it helps to keep your confidence high.”
Hmm..whats your say?
