The Times reports that Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is considering a January move for Nicky Shorey, the Reading and England defender.
The newspaper's online edition says that although Ferguson reckons his current squad is the strongest of his 21-year reign at Old Trafford, he is short of cover for Patrice Evra at left back and has identified Shorey as a target.
Although Shorey still has 18 months left to run on his Reading contract, he has stalled over a signing a new one, despite manager Steve Coppell's wish to secure him long-term to the Madejski Stadium.
United may not want to match Reading’s £5 million-plus valuation for the 26-year-old, but Shorey would probably relish the chance to join the glamorous Premier League champions and boost his salary substantially at the same time.
