Sir Alex Ferguson has expressed his belief that Portuguese wing wizard Cristiano Ronaldo is developing into a better player than Eric Cantona.
The Manchester United manager heaped praise on Ronaldo after his match-winning free-kick gave the Old Trafford side a 2-1 Champions League victory over Sporting Lisbon on Tuesday.
Ferguson said: "I have had some great players here over the years - Bryan Robson and Roy Keane. I love Eric Cantona. He was a marvellous player.
"But, in terms of sheer ability and imagination, Cristiano is without doubt looking the best now."
This is a classic Fergie gaffe that never ceases to amuse me and convinces me he's senile at times - and I'm a United fan.
This is the same chap who claimed the '94 side was the greatest United side ever (back in '94), then reversed his opinion about the '99 side being the greatest (in '99), only to suggest further the sides of '01 and '03 had "more potential" than the '99 side.
Similarly, Fergie claimed Cantona was the greatest United player he'd ever worked with in his heyday, then reverting to Keane being the "best player in his time at United". Needless to say, and few would remember this, he too once claimed that Veron was a "fucking great player"! Some claim that proved to be...
The thrash Fergie churns out in terms of rating the credibility of his players and teams are as believable as what the Singapore government says, really.
On a side note, here's hoping Ronaldo wins the world player of the year.
