Former Busby Babe John Doherty has sadly died, aged 72.
John Doherty 1935 - 2007Doherty, a member of the Reds' title-winning side in 1955/56, scored seven goals in 26 appearances.
In recent years he became an influential figure as chairman of the Association of Former Manchester United Players.
Former Red and close friend, Paddy Crerand, said: "I'm absolutely devastated. It's hard to take. He was a great lad and a big United fan. He was always at the games at Old Trafford and obviously had the history of playing for the club. One of the great things about him was the fantastic work he did for the former players."
United chief executive David Gill said: "John was a tireless leader of the Association of Former Players and his work took the group from strength to strength. He was a much-loved and popular figure at Old Trafford, and his quick wit and easy manner will be greatly missed.
"It was a special moment for him to bring on the Premier League trophy at the end of last season with his friends from the Babes' first title-winning team; a role he performed with great pride and dignity. Our thoughts are with his family."
