Nicolas Anelka has re-emerged as Manchester United's top transfer target.
United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has once again grown frustrated by Louis Saha's injury problems and he has compiled a list of targets which includes the Bolton striker, Ajax hot-shot Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and Dimitar Berbatov.
Bolton and Spurs have both appointed new managers, and Ferguson is monitoring the movements of Anelka and Berbatov.
Saha has a dismal injury record and Fergie is now considering the player's long-term future at Old Trafford.
And with sources close to Anelka indicating he is unhappy at the arrival of new manager Gary Megson, a move for the 28-year-old is back on.
Ferguson considered a swoop for Anelka last summer but did not follow through after landing Carlos Tevez.
Anelka has since signed a new Bolton contract but it is understood he has a get-out clause if a big club comes in for him. With Saha increasingly unreliable and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer retired, United would be short in attack if Wayne Rooney or Tevez picked up an injury and Ferguson does not want to jeopardise his side's chances of silverware.
Holland striker Huntelaar, 24, has also caught Fergie's eye and he rates Berbatov highly, too.
However, Berbatov is likely to be a key player for new Spurs boss Juande Ramos and the club would demand at least £18million for him.
At £10m Anelka, a proven Premier League scorer, would represent better value and the Frenchman has already told friends he will move to Old Trafford in January if he gets the chance.
That would free up funds for Bolton boss Megson to move for Newcastle striker Shola Ameobi.
The Toon striker has just returned from injury, but is behind Michael Owen, Mark Viduka and Obafemi Martins in the pecking order. Megson is also interested in a loan move for United defender Mikael Silvestre.
