Nemanja Vidic has tipped Rio Ferdinand to top Manchester United's scoring charts if he carries on at his present rate.
The Red Devils faithful have grown used to Vidic's prowess in the opposition penalty area since his £7million arrival from Spartak Moscow two years ago.
However, the words prolific and Ferdinand have rarely been used in the same sentence.
Sir Alex Ferguson's £29.1million record signing has never scored more than three times in a season in his entire career and in 41 Champions League outings prior to Tuesday night's encounter with Dynamo Kiev had never found the net in the competition.
But, with Vidic remaining on the halfway line at set pieces to ensure there was no danger of suffering further problems following his exit with concussion during this month's Barclays Premier League win over Wigan Athletic, Ferdinand took his chance to show off his own abilities, rising to power home Ryan Giggs' free-kick and put United on their way to a comfortable 4-2 win.
top scorer
It was Ferdinand's second goal in as many games after he scored at Aston Villa on Saturday and Vidic jokingly claimed the former Leeds United captain could now be rivalling Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney in the scoring stakes.
Vidic said: "If Rio keeps going like this, he is going to finish up top scorer."
"He did brilliantly for his goal and he had another chance apart from that.
"We have always felt there were a lot of goals in this team and now it seems to have clicked for us at last. Obviously, the strikers are the ones we tend to rely on but if defenders can chip in as well, that can only be good news for everyone."
