Sir Alex Ferguson has likened Nemanja Vidic to Manchester United legend Mark Hughes - and backed the Serbian to deliver goals as well.
Vidic was an outstanding performer in Wednesday's Champions League triumph over Sporting Lisbon, guiding United to a fourth successive win, just four days after netting a crucial winner at Everton.
Although the United boss is happy enough with his ability with the ball at his feet, it is Vidic's defensive qualities that really catch the eye.
And, in that sense, Ferguson has no problem comparing him to Bruce, who picked up medals and scars in equal measure during his illustrious stint at Old Trafford.
"Nemanja reminds me of Steve Bruce in the sense he always asks a question of defenders," said Ferguson.
"He wants to know whether they have the courage to put their head in front of his.
"There is no question he can play, there is not a doubt about it. But he doesn't mess about in terms of clearing the ball. He acts like a defender."
Ferguson felt those qualities were very much in evidence during the midweek win, although the United boss has now laid down a challenge to maintain his threat in the opposition box as well.
"He got me five goals last season and has already got one this year," said Ferguson.
"I think he can easily get between five and 10 because he has got just the right qualities."
