Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson has admitted that he regrets selling Dutch defender Jaap Stam.
Stam left United in 2001 amid a storm of controversy, having released his revelatory autobiography just months before.
In the book Stam claimed United had tapped him up prior to buying him form PSV and revealed insights from the club dressing room.
Many believed the book was the reason behind his departure, but Ferguson maintains that it was Stam’s inability to get over an injury that prompted the £16.5million move to Lazio.
The manager has revealed that although the money represented good business, it was a mistake to sell him in footballing terms.
"At the time he had just come back from an Achilles injury and we thought he had just lost a little bit," the Scot told an audience at the Citizens Theatre in Glasgow.
"We got the offer from Lazio - £16.5million for a centre-back that was 29. It was an offer I couldn't refuse.
"But in playing terms it was a mistake. He is still playing for Ajax at a really good level."
