Record-breaker Ryan Giggs will be offered another year on his contract at Manchester United.
Manchester United intend to extend the contract of Welsh winger Ryan Giggs for one more year, which will take him through to the end of the 2008-09 season.
The Sun reports that United officials will open negotiations later this month with 33-year-old Giggs, maintaining his salary at the same level for the extended period.
He is currently on a £75,000-a-week contract at United, with whom he has won a record nine Premier League championship winners' medals.
Giggs has made 721 appearances for the club and is only 38 games away from Bobby CharltonÂ’s all-time United record. He has also scored 141 goals for the club and needs to more in the Premiership to reach the milestone of 100 League goals.
According to The Sun, manager Sir Alex Ferguson has told the United board that he believes Giggs can play at the top level for at least another two years, although he will face competition for his place from the likes of Portuguese summer recruit Nani.
Giggs told The Sun: “Over the last few years the manager has bought young players as he looks to the future,
“Eventually these young players will be United’s future. The club never stands still and never will.”
Reflecting on United's unconvincing start to the season, Giggs said: “It is probably a little bit harder to defend the title, as everyone wants to beat the champions.”
