Paul Scholes will become United's fourth highest appearance maker should he take part in Saturday's Barclays Premier League clash with Sunderland.
Scholes, who has started every league match this season, is set to leapfrog current Reds skipper Gary Neville just a week after displacing former goalkeeper Alex Stepney from the top five.
A run-out against Roy Keane's Sunderland side will take Scholes' appearances to 541, meaning only Bill Foulkes (68
, Ryan Giggs (721) and Sir Bobby Charlton (759) have played more times for United.
Scholes has already broken one record this season, becoming the Reds' most prolific scorer in the Premier League when he fired past David James at Fratton Park on 15 August. That strike took his Premier League tally to 96, one more than Ruud van Nistelrooy.
The 32-year-old made his United debut on 21 September 1994 in a League Cup match at Port Vale. Scholes had an immediate impact, scoring both United's goals in a 2-1 win.
He's since gone on to become one of the most talented and respected midfielders in Europe and was recently selected in a fan-voted United Premier XI .
