Darren Fletcher will captain Scotland in Wednesday's friendly at home to South Africa.Manchester United midfielder Fletcher, 23, will take the skipper's armband at Pittodrie on the occasion of his 30th international cap.
Fletcher takes over the captaincy in the absence of Barry Ferguson, who has been rested this week.
McLeish added: "Getting a leader from the midfield is ideal as far as I'm concerned.
"Craig Gordon was a contender, but I am not big on goalkeepers being captain.
"If you are in the middle of the pitch, you are aware of everything and everyone is aware of you."
