England's Euro 2008 hopes were dealt a major blow last night when it was confirmed that Wayne Rooney had suffered the third metatarsal injury of his career.
Rooney is expected to be sidelined for six weeks after suffering what Manchester United described as a 'hairline fracture of the left foot' towards the end of the first half of their 0-0 draw with Reading at Old Trafford yesterday.
The 21-year-old striker will miss three England games — a friendly against Germany a week on Wednesday and two key qualifiers against Russia and Israel next month — and as many as nine games for his club.
His absence is likely to force new United signing Carlos Tevez into action against Portsmouth at Fratton Park on Wednesday, when United will seek to make up lost ground on title rivals Chelsea and Arsenal who both won yesterday.
Rooney's latest problem is not thought to be as serious as the clean metatarsal breaks he suffered during the finals of Euro 2004 in Portugal and in a game against Chelsea at the end of the 2005-06 season.
Nevertheless, United manager Sir Alex Ferguson revealed that Rooney was in such pain yesterday that he could barely stand at half-time.
Ferguson said: "It was sore and had started to swell. He was having some problem with the pain. His loss was obvious. If he had still been on the pitch we would have won the match."
