Patrice Evra has told Manchester United he is happy to play in midfield if required to do so.
The French ace was given a wide midfield berth in Sunday's Community Shield with Mikael Silvestre starting at left full-back.
Evra sometimes played further up the field for Monaco and is happy giving United an extra option as it increases his chances of starting for Sir Alex Ferguson.
"Playing as a midfielder gives the team an additional option," Evra told L'Equipe.
"Plus it increases my chances of starting. I did well because I've already played there for Monaco."
Evra is delighted to kick off the season with a trophy, but acknowledges it will be tough to reclaim their Premier League crown.
"The Community Shield is a trophy and to start the season with a trophy is a good thing," he continued.
"We have to retain our title, we have no choice. Everyone has strengthened so winning the title will be harder than ever."
