Man Utd win 3-0 on penalties
Edwin van der Sar was the hero as Manchester United captured the Community Shield with a 3-0 penalty shoot-out win over Chelsea at Wembley. The Dutch keeper saved three penalties in a row to earn United victory.
Ryan Giggs had put United ahead after 35 minutes, lashing the ball into the top of the net after a slick move. But Chelsea drew level before half-time when new signing Florent Malouda raced onto Ashley Cole's long-ball and poked the ball past Van der Sar.
After a goalless second half, the match went straight to penalties, with Van der Sar saving from Claudio Pizarro, Frank Lampard and Shaun Wright-Phillips to leave Wayne Rooney to score the winning spot-kick.
Chelsea: Cech, Johnson (Sidwell 78 ), Carvalho, Ben Haim, Ashley Cole (Diarra 67), Wright-Phillips, Essien, Mikel, Lampard, Malouda (Pizarro 51), Joe Cole (Sinclair 82).

anyway i'm quite happy cuz ben haim looks good.
i'm sad cuz of a glen johnson, man utd keep bombarding him the whole game.
but 2nd half man utd played better. -

ben haim did well but he lacked a bit of pace.
a. cole certainly did not deserve the motm award. he was really crap when up against ronaldo. I think he has this stigma; remember how CR made ashley cole do a split (when he was still at arsenal). how totally embarrassing! lol.
i think it should go to o'shea rather than evra. i thought o'shea did his job really well.
overall, it was an evenly-balanced game.
SWP looked lively & silves had a close-to-torrid time.
nani didn't really have an impact when he came on but sort of gave man u's attacking play a little more options.
rooney was as committed as he can be but ferdinand certainly did not impress me by being so easily brushed aside by malouda.
giggs' intelligent play and sweet finish which curled into the top right-hand corner of the goal was no less than what man u deserved.

ALEX FERGUSON hailed Edwin van der Sar after the keeperÂ’s Community Shield heroics for Manchester United. Dutch star Van der Sar, 36, saved ChelseaÂ’s first three penalties in a dramatic Wembley shootout.
Reds boss Fergie said: “He knew the penalties were coming and prepared himself. He is such a big presence and in a shootout he’s a very valuable player to have. “He’s studied players like Frank Lampard taking penalties and that experience has got us the result.”

The match finished 1-1 after 90 minutes with a goal from Chelsea’s £13.5million buy Florent Malouda’s cancelling out Ryan Giggs’ opener. But the United keeper revealed he feared the worst because his record in shootouts is poor.
Van der Sar said: “I was 5-2 down on my career so this is a great feeling. I think we deserved it, we created more chances and it is a little revenge for the FA Cup final.”
Rio Ferdinand and Michael Carrick scored in the shootout before shaven-chested Wayne Rooney buried United’s winning penalty past Petr Cech. The England striker said: “You want to start the season well so this is fantastic.”
Ferguson added: “We’re happy with the trophy, but these kind of matches are not a great gauge because both teams were missing some players.”
The 3-0 win on penalties marks Man Utd's first FA Community Shield victory since beating Arsenal in 2003 -

for me, the biggest worry was our left & rightbacks..
neither Evra or MikelS were able to stamp out SWP and keep him quiet.
Similiarily, WBrown. Can see that his positioning and reading were not at his sharpest, and we really need GaryN back asap.
Our MF was a bit lightweight and allowed Chelsea to have more time on the ball, but with OwenH, we can shore that up. It was a joke seeing how Chelsea dominates the MF with Mikel, Essien and Lampard. Joshea and Carrick just can't match that.
Our attack seems lightweight too. Other than for the goal, I did not see Giggs doing much. No running at defenders, no pulling to the wings.
But Rooney was really bullish. He was trying hard. Sometimes I fear his personal agenda with Ben Haim could have boil over but fortunately, it did not.
Just one thing, was Vidic really pushed or did he flop? Cause he may get a bad reputation for that. -

whether it was a light one or not we won't know.

Great match. I though both teams played quite well, but the Devils had an edge.
I'm actually quite disappointed with Carrick. He seemed to be falling below all the hype that comes with his transfer last season
