Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher has vowed to fight for his place in Sir Alex Ferguson's team despite appearing to have been crowded out by a summer of ambitious spending. The Scottish international has been on the fringes of the first team for a number of years, but he has not been put off by the arrivals of Owen Hargreates and Anderson to the midfield ranks.
Both Hargreaves and Paul Scholes are to miss Sunday's Community Shield against Chelsea and Fletcher knows he has to be at his best when he does have opportunities.
Fletcher told the Daily Star: "The manager has increased competition for places this summer by signing Owen and Anderson, so it is going to be a challenge for me this season.
"But you get that every season at United and although it is going to be difficult, I just have to make sure I do what I can to get that place.
"The manager is committed to having a big squad because of all the games we play, but it's obviously much stronger now with the deals he has done.
"Nobody wants to be left out and I am no different.
"I want to play, no matter who the manager has signed."
