Sunderland boss Roy Keane is hoping to land former Manchester United team-mate Kieran Richardson, who is also wanted by Sheffield United.
Keane has been a busy man already this summer, recruiting full-back Greg Halford for £3million and defender Russell Anderson for £1million as he prepares his squad for life in the Premier League.
The Black Cats are also hoping to strengthen their forward line with the capture of England striker David Nugent from Preston.
So Keane has now turned his attention to bolstering his midfield options - and wants to be reunited with Richardson, according to the Mirror.
The 22-year-old turned his back on a permanent move to West Brom, where he had spent a successful loan spell in January 2005, two summers ago in a bid to fight for a regular first-team spot at Old Trafford.
But Richardson, who can play in midfield or defence, found himself behind Patrice Evra and Gabriel Heinze in the fight for the left-back slot - and struggled to dislodge veteran winger Ryan Giggs.
His versatility appeals to Keane, but he would need to fight off competition from new Blades boss Bryan Robson, who wants to lure him to Bramall Lane on a season-long loan.
Robson recruited Richardson for a loan spell while at Albion - and is keen to work with him again after seeing him play a starring role in the club's 'Great Escape' at the end of the 2004/05 campaign.
