My lecturer at Poly. He say he went to one of his ex-student graduation ceremony at NTU. That ex-student told him that uni work load is many times harder than poly work load. He told us that someone working in the uni (NUS/NTU) want him to let us know that the uni (NUS/NTU) is increasing intake of A level holders and cutting down on the intake of Diploma holders, that we must have higher Poly GPA if we want to go to their university. The reason is because they want to cut down on foreign talent in the local university.
Personally, I feel that this is to correspond with the new universities set up to receive only poly graduates. The top universities like NUS and NTU are gradually shifting to receive only JC graduates.
Well, I am sure there are newspaper articles and statistics to support what I say. Otherwise, you may ask the people working at the NUS/NTU.

You must be very prepared that he might not be able to get in. But there is always a chance that the cop this year might raise to 12.

Hello there Gdmom67. Very sorry to burst your bubble, but your son has very little (or zero) chance to enter SRJC via appeal by academics. if you wish to enter srjc, you should appeal via CCA achievements (sports/performing arts)
I personally witnessed a similar situation last year when some of my classmates had 12nett and 14raw for o levels last year and didnt manage to enter SRJC. Out of the many that appealed in, only one manage to appeal in via CCA achievements. The others went to tpjc, and is doing relatively fine there. Like what Ultimaonline said, TPJC isnt that bad of a school. Do tell your son to be mentally prepared if he is posted to TPJC
ultimaOnline thanks ur advice helped a lot ! wat u said is quite true too that he can't rely on his surrounding n peers to study . it seems like ur teaching Chem at a levels ? my Son is considering to take sci course and most sch combi seems to include h2 Chem in the combi . my Son prefers bio more but he knows that he will prob. have to take Chem. he has been struggling with Chem since Sec 3 like scoring c5-b4 and now he has b3. do u still think his suited for h2 Chem?
Mkwedoe, may I know wat did ur Friend appeal in with ? and cuz he/she didn't get in by academics , was it hard to adjust ? so how's ur other classmates exp in tp? thanks :)

They appealed in via academics, one had 4A2 and 4B3s, same as your son's.
It wasn't that hard to adjust, orientation was relatively fun (i heard). Many of their classmates put SRJC as their first choice and didnt manage to enter, and ended up in TPJC haha.
I myself missed TPJC cop by 1 point last year. A little regretful i didnt manage to enter TPJC, as it's relatively close to my place. I'm sure your son will manage to do well in JC if he chooses the right subject combination and put in consistent effort in his studies. I had a hard time accepting the fact i was not accepted by TPJC, but eventually got over it during my JC1 year.

Yes, I currently give private tuition for H1 & H2 Chem.
I recommend your son start with 4 H2 subjects in J1 first (most JCs allow this, some even make it compulsory), and if he struggles with a particular subject, eg. H2 Chem or H2 Econs or H2 Phys or H2 Maths, then his school will force him to drop his weakest subject to H1 level after his J1 end of year Promotional exams.
But if he intends to study any Science (eg. Medicine, Life Science, etc) or Engineering courses in the Uni, he must take either H2 Chem + H2 Bio, or H2 Chem + H2 Physics (these subjects at H1 levels are totally useless as far as Uni courses are concerned).
Actually many schools such as TPJC only allow students to take 4H2 if they meet a certain requirement etc L1R5 12 (raw)
Actually, the people who are most knowledgeable are the teachers in the JCs, and their principal. You should have went for the open houses and asked the questions that you have.
Well, I guess you can write an email to the JC principal and/or the Heads-Of-Department (HODs) to ask the questions you have.
all suggestions and advice are for reference only
would u make a life decision based on what someone said on the internet?
whether a school is good or not depends on the individual
if ur mindset and attitude is positive, u will enjoy it no matter where u are

Hi, someone refer to this link http://www.nus.edu.sg/oam/apply/local/prerequisites/BYA-prerequisites.html . Under applicants with H1/H2 results , please click " read more " . There , many faculties of NUS are shown . Is that ALL of the faculties that are available ? Because it seems that everything has a pre requisite of passing a science subject in JC , and is thus affecting my decision to enter the arts/science stream

He has no idea where he wants to go
Can any kind souls help him ?
I think if he doesn't take pure science in secondary school, it's better to not go to JC unless you are really willing to work hard and study because H2 sciences are all pure science and even my secondary school friends are having trouble. DnT is not useful in JC i guess. But mostly it's the science and other than that the schools which i want to go to only offer H2 math which is A Math i think. In the end, if he wants a diploma and has a good idea of what he wants to do then he should go poly, he will do great. But if he has no idea and is willing to work hard then JC will be good. Just my opinion ;)
I need help with my after O level postings too ><
My L1R5 is 17-2=15 (Subjects i took = English, MT, EMath, AMath (Fail), Combined Humans (Lit / SS), Pure History, Pure Chem and Pure Bio)
I want to go to JC because i have no interests and no idea on what kind of jobs i'm interested in.
The JCs i'm interested in are Serangoon JC and Tampines JC but i am eligible for Yishun JC, Jurong JC and Innova JC which are all really far from where i live. I heard of people with higher COPs entering into TPJC even though the COP is 13.
I'm thinking of putting SRJC (11 points) as my first, then TPJC (13 points), then YJC (17 points (?)), IJC (20 points) and lastly JJC (15 points) because that's the furthest. For the rest of my choices, i am not putting any Poly courses because i might get them and i don't want to go to poly like i tried last time.
Do you think i am able to get into SRJC or TPJC? Because i really want to get in. Also i am interested in a CCA which is only available in YJC out of those options.. but i don't know if i want to travel that far just for a CCA.
Lastly, I am aiming for Science stream because i don't feel confident in arts. I want to take H2 math, chem, bio and for H1 i don't know if i should take Econs (Not sure what is this also) or History. If anyone knows which is better, can you help me out too? Thanks so much :)
Thanks in advance if you have any advice or can help me out :)

Since that covers all courses within NUS , then I should definitely go to the science stream right? Because this will allow me to take subjects that I have to pass in A levels to make the cut for application for these uni courses. I know NUS is not the only uni , but in this case i'm just using one uni as an example

Those people who have higher scores than tpjc cut off points usually appealed in thru their cca. This may sound harsh but your chances of entering tpjc (dont even talk about srjc) is very slim. U can try but i suggest u to put tpjc as first choice and forget about srjc since it would be more realistic. Btw it may also be hard for you to take H2 math since you fail Amath(at least for tpjc and srjc), so you may not be able to choose the science stream since you are ineligible for any subject combination that have H2 math. If you have an A1 in emath, only yishun jc/innova/jurong jc will allow you to take h2 math so your choices are seriously quite limited here.

Yes, for everyone : unless you're already very certain you wanna do a non-science type of career profession in the future, otherwise (if you wanna keep your options open, or if you're already certain you wanna do Science, eg. Medicine or Engineering), as long as your L1R5 allows you to do so, you should take Science subjects in JC, especially H2 Chemistry and H2 Physics, arguably the 2 most important subjects in JC.
If i really take H2 Physics , Chemistry and Maths , will I be at a disadvantage as compared to the other candidates if i took Combined Science and did not do very well for A maths in O levels ? Also , how should I choose my final contrasting H1 / H2 subject?
