I feel that our children are put to useless tests anything such as memorising texts when the internet and informations are already there.
Instead of training resourceful headed robots, we want resourceful minded people who knows how to manage risk, think of new ideas and improve the society together.
I believe that many children are undervalued just because of pieces of papers/cert. Not knowing the pieces of papers don't mean a lot to many people as they forget about what they learnt in the years.
I believe children must be valued for their unique personality, to strive for a passion they love, and a worthy purpose and cause in their life time.
Anyone who can relate to this, reply. For those who want to continue obey without wanting to help our next generation, can remain silent.
Thanks.

Based on my own experiences, being thinking students, instead of being robot-students, is getting more encouraged in school.
Surely an education system where children can strive for their passion and purpose in life is good, but many people will rather want to keep these goals behind or after their purse for a financially yielding career; or keep these goals as a hobby.
Cool. Good to know thinking student is encouraged. I read an article which I'm not sure if they're same with our context. Which is, that there are schools which talks about critical thinking yet they practice and culture rarely enables that. The system stays the same way, expect people to obey and follow because they have to...
I see, but why people may not want to pursue their passion if they can look for ways to be paid for passion? Artists are paid. Designers are paid. Just not as how school taught. That's why need people to be entrepreneurial (not about having business) but about taking initiative to find ways to be paid for passion. People usually have this funny thing that says children have energy no money, workers have money no time, elderly have time and money but no energy.
If we keep our passion after we're done with our career, when will it be? Because from my own journey i've pushed it back for years, it's only want i started to dive into it and find ways, and slowly I see the potential..

There has been increasing awareness but I guess there's still a form of stigma with regard to pursue for these professions which are often deemed as unconventional or under-appreciated, and difficult to "succeed" in Singapore. The nature of Singapore's economic function further discourages and limits the proliferation of such. Before making changes to the education system, the mindset and the goal of the nation has to change first.

are you parent of children who find your children learning useless tex in schools, or are you children who were forced to learn useless text in schools?
what level of education are you talking about, primary school, secondary school, or higher education?

when did you discover what your passion is, and when did you see your potential?
The SG system has always been receiving a lot of flak for only raising a generation of very good test takers. And it's true, because when you go on to uni, you realize you don't even use half of what you learnt once you specialize. And then when you go out and work, you realize you don't even use 95% of what you learnt in uni...
Problem is, no one's found a better way to efficiently teach a whole population of students than standardized education. Ideally you want to be able to cater to each student's unique passions and strengths like the OP said, but that requires targeted teaching for each student. Perhaps the closest you can get to that is home schooling, which is still rare in SG.
And even when schools try to reduce emphasis on exam grades, it's the parents who freak out. Just look at when they say they want to do away with PSLE, many of the parents are the ones who say they need it ugh.
TS has been missing for a month, is he still interested in the discussion?
yes i guess.
.
They can add another subject called managing yourself/others.
If people learn to handle their emotions, then they will be able to endure stress better.
Also, if you emphasize conflict/relationship management, more parents will emphasize on how to be better socially, and if this is so, the world can be a more peaceful place.
This also helps students because most of everyone's problems revolves around relationship issues too.
Depends on what you want to achieve through a particular education system. In Singapore, the goal is to create workers for the economy, not to create innovators, artists, thinkers and visionaries.
If they had done the latter, more people would end up jobless.
The education system could be more skills-based. In today's digital economy, it seems the system's recent move towards coding/programming in schools is a few steps behind.
